Guide to Kids Beds: Toddler Beds, Youth Beds and More

Here is a brief guide to choosing kids beds that may help you sort through the various styles, designs, and finishes so that you choose a comfortable and functional bed for your kid.

There are a variety of kids beds from which to choose, so no matter what your youngster's bedding needs are, there is sure to be a bed that is just right. Below, are some of the most popular beds for kids.

Toddler Bed

If your child is ready to make the change from crib to a big kids twin platform bed, then toddler beds are a safe, transitional choice for most parents. The price is usually reasonable because it is a given that children will not spend more than a few months or possibly a year in toddler beds. Manufacturers do not put hefty price tags on this type of furniture because it is usually not a long-term furniture investment for most people and cheap kids' beds are quite sufficient for short-term use.

They are also cheaper because you can generally use your crib mattress to place in most toddler beds. The benefits of using a toddler bed are that it helps a child transition from a crib to a regular bed, is lower to the floor than a standard bed, and is equipped with side rails to keep your child from falling out at night.

Youth Beds

What exactly are youth beds? There is generally no difference in size between beds that are termed 'youth beds' and the typical twin or single size bed frame. However, these sleep units that are marketed as youth beds are often designed and decorated to appeal to younger children and older youth up to approximately 10 years of age, even though the size is exactly the same as a typical twin bed.

Most children generally graduate from a toddler bed to a youth bed or twin size bed. Here are several types of twin beds that may suit your purpose for your youngster's bedroom.

Twin Platform Bed Frame - For practicality and financial savings, you can simply select one of the many metal bed frames available and add your twin mattress set to it. In this case, the most expensive product you will buy is the mattress itself. This is often a very practical choice for children's rooms, especially if you plan on expanding to a more expensive bedroom set later on.

Twin bed set - If you want to outfit your child's room with his or her first grown-up bedroom suite, there are many styles, designs, and finishes of twin size bedroom suits. Especially if you have children who will share a room, you can choose 2 beds and the accompanying set. Many of these sets can be used until the kid is grown.

Bunk beds - Bunk beds have always been a popular choice for parents since these sleep units offer two sleep areas, plus free up floor space in a bedroom. There are many types of bunk beds that include trundles for an extra mattress or bed drawers underneath for additional storage space.

Kids bed with drawers - The storage bed has gained in popularity because of the superb functionality and comfort that it brings to any bedroom. This type of bedroom furniture is built with a variety of drawers built right underneath the bed frame, much like well-built cabinetry. You can find kids platform bed twin with storage, captains beds and L-shaped bunk beds that provide storage drawers.

Loft beds - Loft beds are often used for older kids because the sleep space is the equivalent to an upper bunk bed, with the lower space completely empty. This allows for the addition of a desk, dresser, bookshelves or even a couch to be placed underneath the bed. These beds are also great for smaller rooms when more floor space is needed.

Be sure to compare several types of beds for your kid before making a final choice. If your child is old enough, you may want to make him a part of the decision process to ensure complete satisfaction in your purchase. Also, if you buy a bed online, be sure to carefully check out shipping fees, return policies, and warranties on any kids beds before making your final selection.
